Some orthodontic philosophies accept the belief that children are born with Dad’s teeth and Mom’s jaws--and that removal of some teeth is necessary to prevent crowding. The size is accepted and treatment is delayed until crowded teeth are evident. Two or four teeth are extracted near the front of the mouth, making spaces that permit the teeth to be straightened and sometimes pulled back.
These children may have well-aligned teeth, but they are also likely to have an unbalanced facial appearance. Lips are not properly supported, and there tends to be a lack of harmony between teeth and other facial structures.
In other words, it’s not a winning smile.
At Team Ortho, our facial orthopedic approach offers a proven alternative. We don’t accept the large teeth/small jaw theory. Scientific studies show people with crowded and overlapped teeth have the same size teeth as people with perfect alignment. It's the jaws that are underdeveloped and improperly positioned as a consequence of early habits like thumb- or pacifier sucking, mouth breathing, and poor tongue posture. Our strategy is to diagnose and solve the problems by getting to the cause, rather than just treating the symptoms. Suitable bone growth is restored; improper habits are corrected; and whenever possible, the extraction of permanent teeth is avoided. Therefore, our results are lasting, and post-treatment relapse is minimized.
The results? Balance. Harmony. A winning smile. Just what nature intended all along.
